Basements tend to have a complicated set of existing conditions. Mechanical equipment, ductwork and plumbing, laundry, utility meters and storage spaces make for daunting projects. All of these items need to remain accessible for repairs and maintenance. By getting creative, we carved a cool and casual teen space out of a cramped dark basement space.
By adding closets, built-ins and removable panels we were able to put most of the necessary equipment out of site. To keep the feel of a cozy living room and not a long narrow room, our lead carpenter called on his stage building days to create a moveable panel in front of the larger mechanical systems that can slide open like a barn door when needed. The television is mounted with long power cords to minimize disruption. A bench, shelving and storage throughout the space keeps it a tidy environment. The engineered white oak flooring is designed for basement use and complements the wood slat wall which adds warmth and texture while also serving as soundproofing. Matte black cabinetry, backsplash and cabinetry anchor the teen hangout.
